What is Black Phosphate Coating?
Phosphate coating is a crystalline coating applied on the outside of ferrous metals to inhibit corrosion. The phosphating is usually gray to black color on the surface. In nearly all applications, the black phosphate coating is followed by oil coating (P & O) or a corrosion inhibitor, like zinc or manganese, to improve its rusting and anti-galling properties.
Manganese Phosphate Fasteners have similar applications to that of zinc phosphate fasteners. Usually applied on Carbon Steel & High Tensile Fasteners. BoltPort offers manganese phosphate bolts, screws, nuts, washers, stud bolts, etc. in metric and imperial measurement system.
Manganese phosphate coating is also a conversion coating, involves dissolution of a manganese salt crystal over the surface of a metal fasteners in reaction with phosphoric acid in presence of catalyst. The final product deposited over the fastener is manganese iron phosphate which requires a large amount of metal dissolution so that the formation of mangese iron phosphate is facilitated. Manganese phosphate coating requires high operating temperature and higher processing time. Oil can apply to lubricate reducing the friction over threaded parts.
Where Black Phosphate Coating Use?
Manganese phosphating can be used in all products that are required to provide high corrosion resistance in the metal processing industry. It can be applied to many metal parts and equipment such as drill bits and drilling elements, nuts and screws, tooling tools. Manganese phosphate coating is also made on many parts in compressors, oil pumps and hydraulic systems.
Why to use Black Phosphate Coating?
Black Phosphate fasteners have a layer of Black Phosphate Coating applied to their surfaces. The coating serves several purposes:
Corrosion Resistance: It provides a certain degree of corrosion resistance, which is particularly useful in preventing rust and extending the lifespan of the coated parts.
Enhanced Lubrication: The coating can absorb and retain lubricants, making it an excellent choice for parts that require reduced friction, such as fasteners and moving components..
Improved Adhesion: It serves as a good base for painting or other coatings, improving the adhesion of subsequent layers and thus enhancing their durability and performance.
Aesthetic Appeal: The black finish provides an attractive appearance, which can be desirable for parts that are visible or used in consumer products.
Cost-Effective: Black phosphate coating is relatively inexpensive compared to other types of coatings, offering a cost-effective solution for improving the performance and appearance of metal parts.
